"We should use them later! I know we're not supposed to do magic outside school, but who's gonna tell here, right?" Sirius knew the system. He grinned at Severus, elbowing him excitedly. This really was the best.

"I've always known." He nodded his head. "I zapped my mother when she got mad at my brother when we were still little. Also, everyone in my family is a wizard. Always."

That was how it worked. "I'm soooo excited for Hogwarts. What house are you going to be in? I'll be in Slytherin, prolly, my family always is."

"We can't though, can we? If we get caught, it's a punishable offence." He didn't want to lose his kingdom before he even entered it. Adjusting his scraggly old coat, he raised his hand to trace over the inside pocket that kept his wand. "Could we even do it without being caught?" Sirius had apparently zapped someone before so perhaps it was possible. They couldn't always be watching, could they?

At the mention of Slytherin, Severus beamed. "I'm really hoping for Slytherin. Perhaps we'll be sorted in the same house. I should hope so... it'd be nice."

He would already have a friend. That would make life so much easier. "The best sort get into Slytherin."

"See, that's the loophole. They want you to think they can always tell, but they can't, cause they can only tell when stuff happens in a place. So if you do magic where no one else does it, they can catch you. If you do it here? No one will ever know." Sirius smiled and shrugged his shoulders. "And accidental magic doesn't count anyway." Such as when he'd zapped his mother. What a glorious day, worth the punishment.

"It's be decent, getting sorted in a house with you." Sirius nodded. "Everyone in my family gets to Slytherin. I think since Hogwarts existed. My family's older than Hogwarts, don't know where we went before then. Prolly just did magic without school." Which, frankly, sounded fun too. He ran ahead a few steps and opened the door, holding it for Severus. He had been raised to have good manners, after all. "Just give the bloke your list, he knows what first years need."

"My mom was in Slytherin, so were her mother and father. Our whole family, more of less, have been Slytherins. I fully intend to continue the tradition." His mother may have ruined her life being an idiot and abandoning her world and her status but he certainly would not. "The smartest wizards tend to get into Slytherin. Ravenclaw is more for dreamers, really."

Or so his mother had told him. He could believe it, from all he'd read.

Heading inside, he handed his list on to the man with a frown and a nod, turning to Sirius. It was pretty clear from his body language that he was uncomfortable. It was just odd to be around so many people, it left him out of sorts. "A lot of people get into Hogwarts, don't they?" He was going to have to get used to that. His unwashed hair fell into his face as he looked down at his mismatched shoes instead of everyone else. "People tire me out."

"Lots. Don't worry, I bet most of them are decent. I can tell you who's a git when we get there. I'll have the sorting over with quickly, cause my name starts with B. If we end up in the same house, you can come sit next to me." Sirius nodded. Sounded like a good idea, just having a friend off the bat. He watched Severus, frowning. He definitely looked uncomfortable. So he instinctively wrapped an arm around him. "We can go somewhere with less people next. I'll buy us ice cream."

Mostly? He wanted ice cream.

"Really?" The touch was weird and warm ... he wasn't sure if he liked it but then, it was so foreign that it was just heavy on him. Severus looked up from his dirty hair and then nodded his head, an awkward little smile on his face. Someone was being nice to him. It didn't feel real. He looked at Sirius and felt his heart start to ache with want.

No one else ever made him feel like this. Welcome and wanted. He tried his best not to ruin it, grinning a little. "Ice cream? Do you have the money for it? I've not got a lot on me is all..." He could just about afford this stuff.

"Yeah!" Sirius was enjoying this for so many reasons. He had a wand, he had made a friend and his mother wasn't here to correct his speech, so he could say 'yeah' instead of 'yes' as much as he wanted to. Life was pretty grand. "I got loads of money, don't worry about it. I can buy us the biggest ice cream you've ever seen in your life."

Sirius tried to show the dimensions with his hands, then stopped when the bookshop owner looked at them. "There you go, young man."

He was smiling at Severus. And then he looked at Sirius, frowning. "Back so soon? I wouldn't think the young Master Black would just get to run around by himself..."

Sirius squirmed, but grinned, half-hiding behind Severus and then trying to look especially innocent. "'m helping my friend. My mother knows!"

"I'm sure she does." Or, no, he was sure she didn't, because this little boy didn't have a pure-blood name, going by his letter, and that meant that Walburga Black would never ever let her oldest son and heir run around with him. Still, he put his finger to his lips, smiling. They were just boys. "I won't tell."

"Aces!" Sirius was satisfied. Totally getting away with this!

Feel protective as soon as Sirius hid, he very swiftly moved so he could block the boy - just in case. He'd taken a few punches to the face in his life. More than a few, actually. He could take a few more for the first person to be generous and kind to him. Luckily, it didn't end in violence. Little seemed to outside of his house.

He couldn't recall a single argument in his house that didn't end in a fist fight, honestly.

When the man went back to gathering their books, Severus turned to Sirius with fascination. "You must be very important." It was exciting. Severus smiled, unable to hide it. He was already making connections and he'd only just started. This could only go well. "You shouldn't worry, Master Black, I'll keep you safe."

He said the title playfully but with a hint of seriousness. "I'm your friend, after all."

Sirius laughed, shaking his head. "Nah, it's just cause my family's old. One of the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Morgan Le Fay was part of my family? Something like that. History is so boring." Sirius couldn't have cared less. He just shrugged his shoulders and smiled at Severus. "It's boring. I'd rather be from a new family. Old family just means I can't touch anything at home."

Really, truly boring. He moved to grab the bag of books for Severus. He was pretty strong for his age and Severus didn't look it, so he wanted to help. "Still wanna get ice cream now?"

"Yes, of course."

Hurrying ahead, he held the door open for Sirius and then glanced back, watching the book shop owner as he stood behind the desk, mostly watching as Sirius went along. People knew him. He mattered. He had power. Severus wished so desperately he could be Sirius. Walking alongside him, he had to run to watch up, feeling oddly safe and content with his friend. His pureblood, anciently-established wizard friend. This was a dream.
