Feel protective as soon as Sirius hid, he very swiftly moved so he could block the boy - just in case. He'd taken a few punches to the face in his life. More than a few, actually. He could take a few more for the first person to be generous and kind to him. Luckily, it didn't end in violence. Little seemed to outside of his house.
He couldn't recall a single argument in his house that didn't end in a fist fight, honestly.
When the man went back to gathering their books, Severus turned to Sirius with fascination. "You must be very important." It was exciting. Severus smiled, unable to hide it. He was already making connections and he'd only just started. This could only go well. "You shouldn't worry, Master Black, I'll keep you safe."
He said the title playfully but with a hint of seriousness. "I'm your friend, after all."
Sirius laughed, shaking his head. "Nah, it's just cause my family's old. One of the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Morgan Le Fay was part of my family? Something like that. History is so boring." Sirius couldn't have cared less. He just shrugged his shoulders and smiled at Severus. "It's boring. I'd rather be from a new family. Old family just means I can't touch anything at home."
Really, truly boring. He moved to grab the bag of books for Severus. He was pretty strong for his age and Severus didn't look it, so he wanted to help. "Still wanna get ice cream now?"
Hurrying ahead, he held the door open for Sirius and then glanced back, watching the book shop owner as he stood behind the desk, mostly watching as Sirius went along. People knew him. He mattered. He had power. Severus wished so desperately he could be Sirius. Walking alongside him, he had to run to watch up, feeling oddly safe and content with his friend. His pureblood, anciently-established wizard friend. This was a dream.
