"Oh, hey, mate!" Peter grinned happily as if he hadn't just walked around in a really not that big venue for ten minutes looking for his best friend. He walked over to Remus and sat down right next to him, looking him over. "You do just have normal hair. Me too."
He frowned, glancing over at the band. "You think I should grow out my hair?"
"Sometimes I wonder if you even know me." He clearly couldn't pick him out of a crowd so who knows? "And no, I like your hair as it is." A mess of curls that kinda suited him in the oddest way. He never did grow into his looks but he really owned them these days - probably best that Peter didn't toy with it too much.
"See what I mean by that guy being out of my league?" He was stupidly handsome.
"I mean... Yeah." Well, objectively speaking. He loved Remus and Remus wasn't bad-looking at all, but he knew how people saw things. Peter was aware that he was around the bottom of that scale and Remus not much higher. Or lower, depending on his health status. Not fair, but such was life. "But! I see hot girls dating ugly gits all the time, you know? Could happen to us too."
"If we were rich or had something about us. We don't have much going for us though, do we? You got a nice job, at least. You cook. Girls love a bloke who cooks." He couldn't. His mom did his cooking and laundry, he didn't have any cash and he worked nights at a gas station. He had fuck all to offer a guy like that but it was just nice to look at him.
"I suppose it's like window shopping. You look at what you can't have and imagine."
"Yeah, I know that feeling." Peter watched the stage, leaning against Remus and wondering if they had food here. He could go for some chips. "What's his name, do you know?" There, he was ready to help his friend window shopping. He certainly realised that Remus had served at his sounding board about unobtainable girls a lot more often.
"Sirius. He sings nice, doesn't he?" Remus thought it was beautiful but he was thrown by the lyrics. They were quite miserable. Even on upbeat songs, there was this strange edge that almost just made him feel sad? He wasn't sure. He felt like he was listening wrong. Everyone else was dancing and having a good time. He was the one being a dolt about it.
"He's funny and he smiles at me. He winked a few times. It was well weird."
"Huh. That's a weird name, right? It is weird." Peter answered his own question, frowning. Because the name also seemed weirdly familiar. "Maybe he had something in his eye."
Could be. "Or he wants to shag you." There, he was a supportive friend. "You should try flirting. I mean, what's the worst that could happen?"
"He laughs in my face and I never leave the house for a few years while I recover?" He wasn't like Peter, he couldn't laugh away rejection. He hated how much it bothered him but it did. He hated that he didn't feel comfortable in his skin and that people looked at him weird - he hated that he couldn't believe a hot dude was winking at him cause he was hot.
"I like the fantasy. I'm not gonna ruin it by making an idiot of myself flirting with that hot guy."
"Fair." Peter shrugged. "I guess maybe girls are nicer about it." He thought about that for a second, then shook his head. "Nah. Forget that, they are not. Nasty."
Ah, well. What was a bloke to do but keep on trying? "I think when there is a hot girl, I can't help it. I just gotta tell her she's hot, you know? And ask if she got hurt falling from heaven."
Remus smiled and reached up to ruffle Peter's hair. "You'll find a girl if you just relax around them. You come on too strong cause you're nervous. I bet plenty of girls like you. You've got charm and besides, you really do cook well."
Remus would date him if he was even half way attracted to him but, well, he'd known Peter too long to want to date him.
