Barty moved to stand next to Regulus and order a beer each for them, so Regulus wouldn't have to talk right now and potentially end up yelling at the bartender. He could see the temper simmering just below the surface. "Hey, darling. Don't be upset. You tried. It really is loud in here."
No wonder Sirius hadn't heard him right. Not that Barty was convinced that it was clear either way.
"If you want, I could just kiss you." That would clear things up.
"Well, he's not here so he won't see it. Potter is here, he never looks away from that idiot's face." Look at them, over there, making love eyes at each other. Urgh. "I made it perfectly clear before and yet, here we are." He hadn't even kissed Barty in public though... the thrill was there. He wanted to try it. He was no coward.
Turning his head, he nodded and stood up straight, as if he was facing down some biblical beast.
Barty looked at Regulus for a few heartbeat, trying to keep it together. Then he burst into laughter, unable to hold back. There was something incredibly funny about that look on Regulus' face, he couldn't help it.
Finally he reached out with his hand, taking one of Regulus' in his. "Let's just be ourselves, darling. I don't need to put on a show. Not for anyone."
Regulus turned away, clearly pouting as he picked up his drink, gave Barty an annoyed look and sat on a stool, sipping away at his beer. This was the worst. He failed at coming out and now his own boyfriend wouldn't make out with him in public to make a point. God, it was like he didn't even care about his struggles.
Barty rolled his eyes. Of course. Drama king. But he loved him for it, so he moved to stand behind him, slide one arm around his waist and turn his head so he could kiss his neck, even nip at it slightly.
Which was why, when Sirius came back, his eyes lit up immediately, understanding dawning. "Oh. Oh, I get it."
He grinned at Regulus. "Congrats, bro. You really had to go all the way to Lowe to find a boyfriend?"
"He's not from Lowe! I said I was in LOVE, you big tit!" Regulus snapped because for God sake, he never said anything like Lowe. Huffing angrily, he tried to calm himself down because he knew that was helping nothing. "He's from here and we're very much in love. We've been dating for two months and it's wonderful."
So there. He finally said it and it felt good but his moment was kind of ruined by his fuck up so it didn't feel as grand as he wanted it too.
"Who's from Lowe?" James asked, coming up behind Sirius. Regulus' eye twitched.
"I can tell you that Barty here isn't." Sirius was a good brother, right? He glanced at Regulus for approval and only got a glare. Oh, well. What else was new? "Barty is Regulus' boyfriend."
Barty nodded his head, now wrapping both arms around Regulus. Both in an affectionate display and to hold him back before he murdered someone. "We were in school together." He said it to James. "Two years below you. You probably don't remember."
"... Yeah, I don't." James was squinting at Barty, trying to work out if he knew the face but he was so bad at faces. "I would have remembered your face. Handsome. Good pull, Regs. You got a looker here." James grinned and gave Regulus a thumbs up, cheery and happy for his friend's bro. Who looked ready to stab him in the face but whatever. "I didn't know you had a boyfriend."
"It's not an open thing so keep it to yourself." He didn't want it flying around everywhere. He gave Sirius a knowing look. "My parents would not approve."
"Eh, who cares?" James waved a hand of dismissal. "The Black family is psychotic anyway. Who needs them?"
"They are still family." Sirius hastened to say, while looking from James' hair to Barty's and back again. "Mate, he totally has hair like you. Only silkier." Not that James' hair wasn't glorious, which was why he reached up right away to ruffle it. "Good pull, Reg, you got taste!"
Regulus leaned his chin on Barty's shoulder, smiling as he turned his head, kissed his cheek and whispered, just for him. "Better, darling?" He knew his temper threw him sometimes.
"Better." Barely but yes, way better. "Do NOT touch his hair, Potter. I mean it." Regulus caught James before he moved closer to feel Barty's hair. James stopped, held his hand up apologetically and smiled at them as he backed up.
"I was curious. My bad. Hey, Reg has my number - get him to text me what conditioner you use. I gotta sort this mess out." Lily was always on him over it. He ruffled his hair before turning back to Sirius. "Come on, Pads! Let's get this show on the road."
"Excuse you, we are not idiots. We are wankers." Sirius said it with conviction, then he stalked off toward the stage, only stopping once to yell out to his brother across the room. "Oi! Reg! I'm the lad with the guitar! I can't wave during..."
"He really is a wanker," Barty ascertained, amused anyhow. Poor Regulus, such an emotional whiplash. "That went well. Now relax. Look at us, daringly dating in public."
